What is an NPORS Experienced Worker Test? | Apollo QA

4 min readUpdated 8 April 2026

The NPORS Experienced Worker Test (EWT) is a one-day assessment route that allows experienced plant operators to gain formal NPORS certification without completing a full novice training course. This guide explains who it is for, what is involved, and what happens after passing.

What the Experienced Worker Route Is

  • The NPORS Experienced Worker Test (EWT) is an assessment-only route for operators who already have practical experience operating a specific type of plant machinery.

  • Rather than completing a full training course, the candidate undergoes a structured assessment on the relevant machine. The assessment tests both theoretical knowledge (via a written or verbal test) and practical competence (observed operation).

  • The EWT is designed to formally recognise skills that operators have already developed on site, without requiring them to repeat training they do not need.

Who Qualifies for the Experienced Worker Test

  • To be eligible for the EWT route, candidates must have genuine, demonstrable experience operating the relevant plant category. This is typically gained through prior employment in a role involving regular use of that machine.

  • There is no specific minimum years of experience required, but the assessment will identify any significant gaps in knowledge or skill. Candidates who do not meet the standard will not pass.

  • The EWT is not suitable for complete beginners — those with no prior experience on the relevant machine should take the full novice training route.

Assessment Process

  • The EWT assessment is conducted by an NPORS-accredited instructor. It consists of a theory component (written or verbal, depending on the provider and candidate) and a practical component carried out on the relevant machine.

  • The theory test covers knowledge of safe operation, pre-use checks, hazard identification, and relevant regulations. The practical assessment requires the candidate to demonstrate competent, safe operation of the machine.

  • The assessment is carried out to the NPORS standards for that category. Both elements must be passed for the candidate to receive certification.

How Long the Test Takes

  • The NPORS Experienced Worker Test typically takes one day for most plant categories. This includes both the theory assessment and the practical assessment.

  • Some categories may have slightly different durations — always confirm the expected duration with the training provider when booking.

  • The EWT is significantly shorter than full novice training, which can take between 1 and 10 days depending on the plant category.

What Happens After Passing

  • Candidates who pass the NPORS EWT receive an NPORS operator card for the relevant plant category. The card can be either a traditional NPORS card or, where applicable, an NPORS CSCS-embossed card.

  • The traditional NPORS card is valid for 3 or 5 years. Operators wishing to progress to the NPORS CSCS blue competent operator card will need to complete a relevant NVQ.

  • If a candidate does not pass the EWT, they will be advised on the areas requiring improvement. They may need to take additional training before re-assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, provided you have genuine practical experience on the relevant machine. The EWT is designed for operators who already have on-site experience and simply need it formally assessed and certified.

Novice training combines training and assessment over a longer period and is for operators with little or no prior experience. The EWT is assessment-only and is for operators who already have practical experience.

The NPORS experienced worker test is priced at £375 + VAT for most categories through Apollo QA. Contact us to confirm the price for your specific plant category.

Passing the EWT gives you an NPORS operator card. If you require a CSCS-embossed card, this can be arranged through the NPORS CSCS card route. Progression to the blue competent operator card requires completion of an NVQ.
