How to Get a Digger Ticket in the UK | Excavator Training Guide
A "digger ticket" is the informal term for a recognised plant operator qualification that allows you to legally and safely operate an excavator on construction sites. This guide explains how to get one, what it involves, and how long it takes.
What a Digger Ticket Is
A digger ticket is not a single official document — it is an informal industry term for any recognised plant operator card or certificate that authorises an operator to use excavators or diggers on construction and civil engineering sites.
In practice, the most common routes to getting a digger ticket in the UK are through NPORS (National Plant Operators Registration Scheme) or CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme).
Operators typically need to show their card before they are allowed to operate plant on site. Without a recognised card, most principal contractors will not permit plant operation.
Types of Excavator Training
Excavator training is available for multiple machine types. The most common are the 360° excavator (standard back actor) and the 180° excavator (face shovel / backhoe), as well as the micro excavator 360° for smaller machines.
Each machine type requires separate training and certification. If you operate more than one type of excavator, you will need separate cards for each category.
Training courses cover pre-use checks, safe operation, banksman communication, working near underground services, slewing and digging techniques, loading, and end-of-day procedures.
NPORS Excavator Courses
NPORS offers training for Excavator 360° (N202), Excavator 180° (N201) and Micro Excavator 360° (N016) — the most common categories used in construction and civil engineering.
Both novice training and experienced worker test routes are available for each category, making NPORS accessible to both new entrants and experienced operators seeking formal certification.
NPORS excavator cards are accepted across the UK by the majority of principal contractors and are a recognised route to the CSCS blue competent operator card via NVQ completion.
Excavator Novice Training
Novice training is the full training and assessment route for operators with no prior formal certification. The Excavator 360° novice course runs for 10 days and combines both training and assessment delivered by an NPORS-accredited instructor.
Novice training covers both the theoretical and practical elements. On completion, candidates receive an NPORS operator card for the relevant excavator category.
No prior experience is required for the novice route, making it suitable for new entrants to plant operation and those transitioning from other trades.
Experienced Worker Test Route
Experienced operators who already have practical excavator experience can take the NPORS Experienced Worker Test (EWT) instead of full novice training. The EWT is a one-day assessment covering both theoretical knowledge and practical excavator operation.
To be eligible for the EWT, candidates must demonstrate that they already have meaningful experience operating the relevant machine type. The assessment will test to NPORS standards.
The EWT is a faster and more cost-effective route for experienced operators and is a common choice for those who have been operating machines informally without formal certification.
How Long Excavator Training Takes
The Excavator 360° novice course takes 10 days. The Excavator 180° and Micro Excavator 360° novice courses typically take 3 to 5 days depending on the category.
The experienced worker test for any excavator category takes 1 day.
After completing training or the EWT, the NPORS card is typically issued within a few weeks of successful assessment.
Frequently Asked Questions
There is no legal requirement to hold a specific card to operate an excavator in the UK, but most construction sites require operators to hold a recognised competence card (NPORS or CPCS) as a condition of site access.
Yes. The NPORS novice training route is designed for operators with no prior formal experience. Training and assessment are delivered together over the course duration.
NPORS Excavator 360° novice training is priced from £1,900 + VAT. The experienced worker test is £375 + VAT. Contact Apollo QA for a full quote.
