How Long Does a First Aid Certificate Last?

4 min readUpdated 9 April 2026

First aid certificates do not last forever. This guide explains how long workplace first aid qualifications remain valid and when refresher training should be completed.

Certificate Validity Periods

  • Most workplace first aid certificates issued under NUCO accreditation are valid for 3 years from the date of successful completion.

  • The following certificates are valid for 3 years: Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW), First Aid at Work (FAW), Paediatric First Aid, and Outdoor First Aid.

  • Annual refresher courses and Mental Health First Aid issue a certificate of attendance rather than a timed qualification. These do not expire in the same way but represent skills maintenance rather than a full requalification.

  • It is the employer's responsibility to track certificate expiry dates and arrange requalification before certificates lapse.

Annual Refresher Training

  • The HSE strongly recommends annual refresher training for all first aid certificate holders, even though it is not a legal requirement.

  • Annual refreshers are typically half-day courses covering CPR, AED use, airway management and common emergencies. They help first aiders maintain confidence and competence between full requalification cycles.

  • Some employers require their first aiders to complete annual refresher training as a condition of their first aider role, regardless of HSE recommendations.

  • Completing an annual refresher does not extend or replace a certificate. It issues a certificate of attendance as evidence of ongoing training.

Requalification

  • To maintain a current FAW certificate, holders must complete the First Aid at Work Requalification course — a two-day course — before their existing certificate expires.

  • EFAW holders must complete the full one-day EFAW course again to renew their certificate.

  • Requalification must be completed before the certificate expires. If a certificate lapses, the first aider will need to retake the appropriate full course rather than the requalification route.

  • The new certificate is dated from the date of completion and is valid for a further 3 years.

Frequently Asked Questions

The NUCO First Aid at Work certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of successful completion. Requalification must be completed before the certificate expires to avoid needing to retake the full three-day course.

Annual refresher training is not a legal requirement but is strongly recommended by the HSE. Many employers include annual refreshers as a condition of holding a first aider role to maintain competence between requalification cycles.

If an EFAW or FAW certificate expires, the first aider cannot complete the shorter requalification course and must retake the appropriate full course (one day for EFAW, three days for FAW). Employers should track certificate expiry dates carefully to avoid this.
