How to Get a CSCS Gold Supervisor Card | Step-by-Step Guide

The CSCS Gold Card — formally the Gold Supervisor Card — is issued to construction workers in supervisory roles. It demonstrates that the holder has both the competence and qualifications required to supervise work on site.

It is required by most major contractors for forepersons, gangers, working supervisors, and team leaders across all trades and disciplines.

The Gold Card sits above the Blue Skilled Worker Card and below the Black Manager Card in the CSCS card hierarchy.

To apply for the CSCS Gold Supervisor Card you need: a relevant NVQ at Level 3 or Level 4 in a construction supervisory discipline, and a valid CITB Supervisors Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) test pass.

The most direct NVQ route is the Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Supervision, which meets the qualification requirement for the Gold Card.

You must pass the CITB Supervisors HS&E test — not the Operatives or Managers version — to be eligible.

The Level 4 NVQ is a workplace portfolio qualification — no classroom attendance and no written exams. Assessment is based on evidence of your real supervisory activities.

Evidence typically includes: toolbox talk records, briefing notes, RAMS, daily diaries, quality inspection records, programmes, drawings, permits to work, handover notes, and photos or videos of supervising work on site.

You are assigned a dedicated assessor who supports you from enrolment through to completion.

The Level 4 NVQ typically takes 4 to 8 weeks from enrolment to completion, depending on how quickly evidence is available and how engaged the candidate is in the process.

The CITB Supervisors HS&E test can usually be booked at a local test centre within a week or two.

From starting the NVQ to holding the Gold Card, most candidates are done within 2 to 3 months.
