NRSWA Reassessment Explained | Renewing Your Streetworks Card

4 min readUpdated 18 April 2026

NRSWA Streetworks accreditation cards are valid for five years. Once they expire, card holders must complete a reassessment to renew their accreditation. This guide explains what reassessment involves, who needs it, and how to go about renewing your Streetworks card.

Why Do Streetworks Cards Expire?

  • NRSWA accreditation is designed to ensure that workers remain competent in current streetworks standards and practices. Roads guidance, reinstatement standards, and traffic management requirements are updated periodically, and reassessment ensures that card holders are up to date with any changes.

  • Cards are issued for a five-year period. After five years, the card expires and the holder must complete a reassessment to continue working on the public highway in an accredited capacity.

What Does a Reassessment Involve?

  • A reassessment is shorter than the original NRSWA course. Rather than going through all training material from scratch, reassessment focuses on testing that candidates still hold the required knowledge and practical competence for the units they were originally accredited in.

  • The format typically involves written and/or practical assessments for each unit being renewed. Candidates who pass receive a renewed Streetworks card valid for a further five years.

  • You will need to reassess in the same units you originally qualified in. If your role has changed and you now need additional units, those would need to be taken as new units rather than as part of a reassessment.

When Should You Book a Reassessment?

  • It is recommended to book your reassessment before your current card expires. Continuing to work on the highway with an expired card puts you and your employer at risk of enforcement action.

  • Check the expiry date printed on your current card and plan to book your reassessment with enough time to complete it before that date.

  • Apollo QA regularly runs reassessment sessions across our East Midlands training centres. Check our course calendar for upcoming dates.

What If Your Card Has Already Expired?

  • If your Streetworks card has already expired, you cannot legally continue to carry out or supervise street works until it has been renewed. You will still need to complete a reassessment rather than a full new course in most cases, but you should contact your training provider to confirm the correct route based on how long ago your card expired.

  • Apollo QA can advise on the right course of action for expired cards. In some circumstances — particularly if the card has been expired for a significant period — a full course may be required.

Operative and Supervisor Reassessments

  • Reassessments are available at both operative and supervisor level. The content and duration differs between the two pathways, reflecting the different units each level covers.

  • If you hold a supervisor card, your reassessment will cover supervisor-level units. Operative card holders reassess on operative units. You cannot use a supervisor reassessment to renew an operative card, or vice versa.
