NRSWA Reassessment &Streetworks Card Renewal
Is your Streetworks card approaching expiry? Operatives and supervisors must complete reassessment before their card lapses to maintain SWQR registration and continue working on the public highway.
When Do You Need Reassessment?
Streetworks cards issued under the New Roads and Street Works Act are typically valid for five years. Before the card expires, the holder must complete a reassessment to confirm their continued competence. This is not optional — it is a regulatory requirement for anyone working on or supervising works on the public highway.
Reassessment must be completed before the expiry date on your card. If you allow your card to lapse, additional steps may be required to reinstate your registration, which can take longer and cost more than a straightforward reassessment.
It is the responsibility of the individual and their employer to monitor card expiry dates and book reassessment in good time. We recommend starting the process at least two to three months before your card is due to expire.
Do not leave it too late
Book your reassessment well before your card expiry date. Gaps in registration can affect your ability to work and may require full retraining.
Who Needs Reassessment?
Reassessment applies to anyone who holds NRSWA units on the Street Works Qualifications Register and whose registration is approaching the five-year renewal point.
Operatives approaching 5-year expiry
Anyone holding operative-level NRSWA units whose Streetworks card is due for renewal.
Supervisors approaching expiry
Supervisors registered at S1 or S2 level who need to maintain their SWQR registration.
Utilities contractors maintaining compliance
Organisations working under statutory undertaker obligations who need their teams to remain compliant.
Employers ensuring workforce competency
Companies responsible for keeping their operatives and supervisors properly registered and qualified.
What Does the Reassessment Involve?
Reassessment is designed to confirm that you still hold the knowledge and competence required for the units on your SWQR record. It is not a repeat of the full training programme — instead, it focuses specifically on verifying your continued understanding of the key areas.
The assessment is aligned to the requirements of your currently held units and may include knowledge-based checks, scenario discussions and practical elements depending on the specific units being reassessed. The focus is on demonstrating that your skills and understanding remain current and fit for purpose.
Knowledge Checks
Questions aligned to the units you currently hold, confirming your understanding of key requirements and regulations.
Scenario-Based Elements
Practical discussions and scenario work to demonstrate how you would apply your knowledge in real site situations.
Unit-Specific Assessment
Assessment tailored to your registered units — whether operative, supervisor or both.
Competence Confirmation
The process confirms your continued competence without requiring you to retake full training.
What Happens If Your Card Has Expired?
If your Streetworks card has recently expired, a reassessment route may still be available. The exact options depend on how long your card has been expired and the specific units you hold. In many cases, delegates who are within the allowed reassessment window can still complete the process without retraining.
However, if your card has been expired for a significant period, you may need to complete the full unit training again. This takes longer, costs more and could leave you unable to work on the highway in the meantime.
Before expiry
Standard reassessment applies. Book early to secure your preferred date.
Recently expired
Reassessment may still be available. Contact us to check your options.
Long expired
Full retraining may be required. Get in touch for advice on your situation.
Certification & Validity
On successful completion of reassessment, your Street Works Qualifications Register (SWQR) registration is renewed and a new Streetworks card is issued. Your card validity resets in line with the standard NRSWA five-year cycle, giving you continued authorisation to work on or supervise works on the public highway.
After Successful Reassessment
- SWQR registration renewed for your held units
- New Streetworks card issued with updated validity
- Five-year validity cycle resets from completion date
- Recognised by employers and highway authorities across the UK

NRSWA Streetworks cards are typically valid for five years from the date of issue. After this period, you must complete a reassessment to maintain your SWQR registration and continue working on the public highway.
We recommend booking your reassessment at least two to three months before your card expires. This gives you time to secure a suitable date and avoids any risk of your card lapsing before you complete the process. Leaving it until the last minute can result in gaps in your compliance.
If your card has recently expired, a reassessment route may still be available depending on how long it has been since expiry. However, if your card has been expired for a significant period, you may be required to complete the full unit training again. The best approach is to contact us as early as possible so we can advise on your specific situation.
Not if you complete your reassessment before your card expires or within the allowed reassessment window. Reassessment is designed to confirm your continued competence without requiring you to retake the full training programme. However, if your card has been expired for too long, full retraining may be necessary.
The duration depends on which units you hold and need reassessing. Reassessment is typically shorter than the original training, as it focuses on confirming your existing knowledge and competence rather than teaching from scratch. Contact us with your current card details and we can confirm the expected duration.
You are reassessed against the units you currently hold on your SWQR record. This could include operative units, supervisor units, or both, depending on your registration. We will confirm exactly which units apply when you book.
If you do not meet the required standard, your assessor will explain which areas need further work. You will have the opportunity to reattempt the assessment. We are committed to supporting every delegate through the process and will work with you to ensure you are prepared.
Yes. We regularly work with employers who need to reassess multiple operatives or supervisors. Group bookings can be arranged at our centre in Ripley or at your site. Contact us with the number of delegates and their card expiry dates, and we will put together a plan that works for your organisation.
Bring your current Streetworks card (even if expired) and a valid form of photo ID. Having your card details helps us confirm the units being reassessed and ensures the process runs smoothly.
