The Supervisor's Role in Signing, Lighting & Guarding

As a supervisor, your responsibility goes beyond the physical placement of signs and barriers. You are accountable for planning the site layout, ensuring operatives implement SLG correctly, monitoring compliance throughout the works and maintaining standards from start to finish.

Under the New Roads and Street Works Act, supervisors must demonstrate competence in overseeing the protection of streetworks sites. This means understanding the relevant codes of practice, being able to assess whether a site layout meets the required standard and taking corrective action when it does not.

This unit — Supervisor Unit S1 (Unit 10 elements) — focuses on the knowledge and decision-making skills supervisors need to plan, monitor and maintain effective signing, lighting and guarding. It is delivered as a standalone 1-day course and is also included within the full 5-day NRSWA Supervisor course.

Already doing the 5-day course?

Unit 10 (S1) is automatically included in the full 5-day NRSWA Supervisor course. You only need to book this standalone 1-day course if you require the SLG supervisor unit separately — for example as a refresher.

Course Delivery

This is a one-day instructor-led course delivered at our training centre in Ripley, Derbyshire. The day is structured around the supervisory role — combining essential theory with scenario-based discussion so you leave equipped to plan and oversee SLG effectively on real sites.

The morning covers the legal framework, codes of practice and the principles behind effective site protection at supervisor level. The afternoon focuses on practical application — reviewing site layout scenarios, assessing compliance, identifying deficiencies and understanding the decisions supervisors need to make. Assessment is completed on the same day.

Regulatory Framework

NRSWA requirements, codes of practice and the supervisor responsibilities for ensuring compliant site protection.

Oversight & Monitoring

How to review site layouts, monitor operative compliance and identify when standards are not being met.

Scenario-Based Learning

Working through realistic site scenarios from the supervisor perspective — planning layouts, assessing risk and making decisions.

Same-Day Assessment

Knowledge checks and scenario-based assessment are completed during the course — no separate exam day required.

Assessment & Certification

Assessment is carried out throughout the day by your instructor from the supervisor perspective. It focuses on scenario-based understanding — demonstrating your ability to plan site layouts, evaluate whether SLG arrangements meet the required standard and oversee compliance effectively. Knowledge checks are aligned to the S1 unit requirements. There is no separate written examination.

On successful completion, Unit 10 (S1) is registered on your Street Works Qualifications Register (SWQR) record. SWQR registration is valid for five years in line with the standard NRSWA cycle and is recognised by employers and highway authorities across the UK.
