Level 4 Site Supervision NVQ: Requirements, Evidence & Duration
The Level 4 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Supervision is assessed entirely on your real supervisory work — no exams, no classroom. This guide covers who qualifies, what evidence assessors need, and realistic completion timescales.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal academic entry requirements for the Level 4 NVQ. The key requirement is that you are currently working in a supervisory capacity on a construction site.
Typical candidates include site supervisors, working forepersons, gangers, team leaders, and senior tradespeople overseeing the work of others.
You do not need to have completed the Level 3 NVQ first, though some candidates choose to progress from Level 3 to Level 4.
Evidence Required
The Level 4 assessment is based on evidence of your supervisory activities. Assessors typically look for: RAMS (risk assessments and method statements), toolbox talk records and briefing notes, daily diaries or activity records, inspection and quality check records, drawings and programmes you have worked to, permits to work, handover notes, and witness testimony from a line manager or client.
Evidence can be submitted digitally — scanned documents, photos, and video are all acceptable formats.
Duration
Most candidates complete the Level 4 NVQ in 4 to 8 weeks from enrolment. The exact duration depends on how quickly evidence can be gathered and how consistently the candidate engages with the process.
There is no minimum time requirement. Once all assessment criteria are satisfied, the qualification can be awarded without delay.
Candidates who already have organised documentation from their current or recent supervisory role can often complete at the faster end of the 4 to 8-week range.
Assessment Method
Assessment is through a combination of portfolio evidence and professional discussion. There are no written exams and no attendance at a college or training centre.
The professional discussion is a structured conversation with your assessor to confirm your knowledge and decision-making in your supervisory role. It is not a formal test and does not require specific revision.
Witness testimony — a statement from someone who has observed your supervisory work — can also be used to supplement portfolio evidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. The size of your employer does not matter. What matters is that you are actively supervising work on site and have access to relevant documents.
The Level 3 NVQ covers occupational work supervision at an operative level — directing a small team or gang. The Level 4 NVQ covers broader site supervision responsibilities and meets the requirement for the CSCS Gold Supervisor Card.
It is possible, but most candidates complete one qualification at a time. Speak to us if you want to understand the most efficient pathway for your career stage.
