Level 3 Occupational Work Supervision NVQ: Entry Requirements

4 min readUpdated 4 March 2026

The Level 3 NVQ in Occupational Work Supervision has no formal academic entry requirements — but it is a work-based qualification and you need to be in a supervisory role to generate the evidence required. This guide explains who can enrol.

Who Is This NVQ For?

  • The Level 3 NVQ in Occupational Work Supervision is designed for tradespeople and construction workers who have moved into — or are working in — a supervisory capacity over a team or gang.

  • Typical candidates include: working forepersons, gangers, senior tradespeople who direct the work of others, and operatives who have recently taken on supervisory responsibilities.

  • It is one step below the Level 4 Construction Site Supervision NVQ in the qualification hierarchy.

What Experience Is Required?

  • You need to be actively supervising people and work on site. The qualification is assessed on your real supervisory activities — which means you need current or very recent experience to generate evidence.

  • You do not need to have managed a whole site or project. Supervising a team or trade activity is sufficient.

Evidence Required

  • Typical evidence for the Level 3 NVQ includes: toolbox talk records, briefing notes, work activity records, risk assessment awareness documentation, daily diaries or activity logs, evidence of directing and checking the work of others, and records of communication with supervisors or managers.

  • Your assessor will agree an evidence plan with you at induction tailored to your specific role.
