What Evidence Do You Need for the Level 6 NVQ in Construction?
The Level 6 NVQ is assessed entirely through a portfolio of workplace evidence. Knowing what evidence is needed — and what format it should take — is the best way to prepare before you enrol. This guide gives you a clear picture.
Types of Evidence Accepted
The Level 6 NVQ accepts a range of evidence types. All must be authentic (genuinely produced as part of your role) and relevant to the assessment criteria being met.
Common evidence categories include: health and safety documentation (risk assessments, method statements, permits to work, toolbox talk records), planning and programme documentation (construction programmes, schedules, resource plans), quality and compliance records (inspection records, non-conformance reports, quality audit records), workforce and subcontractor management records (briefing notes, instruction records, correspondence), commercial and procurement documentation, and project communications and progress reports.
Physical vs Digital Evidence
Evidence does not need to be physical. Scanned documents, photos of site activities, video clips, emails, and digitally signed records are all accepted.
Many candidates submit evidence through a digital portfolio platform. Your assessor will set this up for you at induction and explain how to upload and annotate evidence.
How Much Evidence Is Needed?
There is no fixed number of documents required — the focus is on quality and coverage of the assessment criteria. A smaller number of well-chosen, annotated documents will typically satisfy criteria more efficiently than a large volume of generic paperwork.
Your assessor will produce an evidence plan at induction that maps your evidence to the specific criteria it needs to meet. This removes guesswork and makes the process efficient.
Professional Discussion
Alongside your portfolio, a professional discussion with your assessor is used to verify your knowledge and decision-making. This is a structured conversation — not an exam — in which your assessor explores how and why you manage your site activities in the way you do.
Witness testimony from a line manager or client can also be used to supplement portfolio evidence where appropriate.
Frequently Asked Questions
This is a common concern. Evidence can be anonymised by removing sensitive commercial information such as client names, addresses, and contract values. Speak to your assessor at induction about what can be redacted.
Yes, evidence from recent previous projects is generally acceptable. Your assessor will advise on how recent evidence needs to be and what can be used.
Photos and videos of you managing on site can be useful supplementary evidence but are not mandatory. Documentary evidence such as records, reports, and correspondence forms the core of the portfolio.
